Traces of What Once Was
This work was created for the interim exhibition in February 2024.
After Ephemeral Permanence, 2023, I intended to explore how more movement and energy can be created with water. Works by Cristina Iglesias such as ‘Tres Aguas’ (2014) helped inform this decision to create a piece with running water.
Slide show of Traces of What Once Was, Fired and Unfired Stoneware Sculpture, 90 x 90 x 100cm, 2024. Open in Wide view.
Incorporating fired and unfired clay, this work pumped and re-used the same water. Washing away existing ephemeral forms and altering the perception of the permanent forms. Enhancing emotional connections to the natural forms washed away, through a process of destruction. This work was challenged by breakages during the firing process, which was later found to add an interesting texture to the piece. This made me consider new textures within the work and methods of creating them.
