Holding Beauty

Holding Beauty is made from fired porcelain, and was displayed at Hypha Studios in Reading town centre. Fall, decay, and deterioration of living things such as plants were explored in contrast to the intact full bloom sculpture. On reflection, with this sculpture made from white clay, displayed on a white wall, the work and details became slightly lost. Moving forward I wanted to experiment using another colour clay to examine the effect this will have on not just the work but the way the audience interact with it.

Slide show of 'Holding Beauty', October 2023, Porcelain Sculptures, 28 x 20cm, 20 x 12cm. Open in wide view.

Originally the investigation of life, death, beauty, and decay were taken from Vanitas of the baroque period. They offer an awareness of mortality, evoking a truth that nothing will sustain against decay and death. This work incorporates this by taking sculptured plants which are then broken, deteriorating the form. This process was found to be successful, therefore, I wished to explore other means of allowing the sculptural forms to deteriorate.
