Loss & Discovery
Loss & Discovery is a sculpture made from unfired stoneware. It is part of an external exhibition held at Hypha Studios from March - May 2024.
This work explored the loss of the natural forms exposed to water, which deteriorated, decayed, and deformed. And the discovery of what remained and what it became. The clay was sculpted around wood and wire structures, with elements of the sculpture exposed to water to deform the botanical forms.
Slide show of Loss & Discovery, 2024, unfired stoneware, 35 x 51cm. Open in wide view.
From previous works, I began to consider texture and how damage to the forms can create interesting shapes and meaning. Here the forms were deformed from water and left to dry in that state, exploring a sense of loss and emotional attachment of the flowers. Through loosing the forms, aims to evoke a sense of appreciation for what once was. This process was successful and will be continued in future works.
